Community-Shaped Solutions for Lakewood

When I stepped into this role, I promised to listen before acting. Over the past months I’ve been walking Ward 3, meeting with neighbors in every corner, from Belmar to our horse properties, from condos to single-family homes.

What you’ll find here isn’t just “my” vision. These are solutions co-created with residents through conversations and community forums. They reflect what matters most right now: housing, safety, transparency, inclusivity, sustainability, and opportunity.

This page is a living document, a place to show how we’re turning community input into action. Each section shares:

  • The Issue

  • Ideas and solutions that surfaced in conversations, and

  • Our next steps for making them real together.

Addressing Homelessness & Expanding Housing Opportunities

The Issue: The solution to homelessness is in the word itself; home-less means you need a home first, a stable foundation to rebuild from. Homelessness isn’t just about individual struggles, it’s about how people become homeless in the first place and what we can do to prevent it.

Without a stable home, challenges like economic hardship, mental health struggles, and job loss become even harder to overcome. Studies consistently show that investing in housing-first strategies not only reduces homelessness but also strengthens public safety, lowers taxpayer costs, and relieves pressure on emergency services.

By focusing on proven, fiscally responsible solutions, we can ensure that Lakewood remains a safe, thriving community where everyone has the opportunity to rebuild and contribute.

Community-Shaped Solutions:

1) Explore the Housing First Model for Lakewood

Proven Strategy: Many cities have proven this is a leading approach to ending homelessness by providing stable housing first and then offering supportive services. Studies show this method reduces taxpayer costs compared to policing, emergency services, and shelters.

My Approach:

  • Commission a Study on Feasibility. Work with housing experts, nonprofits, and city planners to evaluate how a Housing First model could be tailored for Lakewood.

  • Pilot a Small-Scale Program. If research supports it, begin with a strategic conversion of a vacant property into supportive housing, tracking outcomes before expanding.

  • Use Data to Guide Decision-Making. Track outcomes before expanding, if it works, scale up responsibly.

2) Ensure TABOR Funds Are Used Transparently for Public Safety & Crisis Response

Why This Matters: Voters approved Measure 2A to retain TABOR funds for public safety, roads, parks, and open space. We must ensure every dollar is spent as intended.

My Approach:

  • Expand Crisis Response Teams. Use 2A funds to strengthen co-responder programs so mental health professionals work alongside law enforcement to handle crisis situations.

  • Increase Transparency & Public Reporting. Require easy-to-access online reports and a public dashboard showing how TABOR funds are used.

  • Invest in Infrastructure Upkeep. Ensure funds support safer public spaces, roads, and parks, making Lakewood cleaner and more accessible.

3) Establish a Homelessness Solutions Advisory Committee (Currently Building Out)

Why This Matters: The best policies come from those with lived experience and expertise in housing and homelessness solutions. A dedicated committee will ensure a balanced, community-driven response.

My Approach:

  • Include a Diverse Group of Stakeholders. This committee will bring together:

    • Nonprofits & Housing Experts. Proven leaders in homelessness prevention.

    • Residents with Lived Experience. Those who understand the barriers firsthand.

    • Small Business Owners & Community Members. People who see the daily impact.

    • Public Safety & Mental Health Professionals. Ensuring practical, actionable policies.

  • Ensure Resident Participation & Transparency. Hold public meetings & quarterly reports so Lakewood residents stay informed.

4) Strengthen Rental Assistance & Eviction Prevention Programs

Proven Strategy: Early intervention programs that help people stay in their homes reduce homelessness rates and lessen the burden on emergency services.

My Approach:

  • Enhance Emergency Rental Assistance. Collaborate with state partners and local organizations to bolster rental relief programs for families at risk of eviction.

  • Amplify Tenant-Landlord Mediation Services. Promote and expand existing mediation programs in Lakewood, ensuring they are well-publicized and accessible to prevent disputes from leading to eviction.

  • Improve Language Accessibility. Ensure all housing resources and services are available in multiple languages, reflecting the diverse makeup of our community.

5) Improve Access to Resources & Language Accessibility (Currently Implementing)

Why This Matters: The City of Lakewood already provides valuable resources, but many residents either don’t know about them or can’t access them due to language barriers.

My Approach:

  • Ensure Resources Are Well-Publicized & Easy to Find. Work with community centers, libraries, and local businesses to distribute clear, updated information on housing and homelessness resources.

  • Improve Language Accessibility. Expand Spanish-language and multilingual materials so that all residents have equal access to resources and assistance.

  • Recognize & Collaborate with Existing Organizations. The city should actively partner with nonprofits, faith-based groups, and grassroots efforts that are already doing important work rather than duplicating efforts.

Affordable Housing Development:
Ensuring Responsible Growth and Housing for All Residents

The Issue:

Lakewood has always been a place where families put down roots, where small businesses thrive, and where neighbors know each other. We can’t allow housing costs to push people out, but we also can’t allow rapid, uncontrolled development to change the character of our neighborhoods. Growth is necessary, but it must be thoughtful, balanced, and guided by Lakewood’s values, ensuring that teachers, first responders, and working families can afford to live here without compromising what makes Lakewood special.

Community-Shaped Solutions:

1) Encourage "Missing Middle" Housing (Currently Implementing)

Definition: "Missing Middle" housing refers to multi-unit housing types, duplexes, townhomes, fourplexes, and courtyard apartments that provide affordable alternatives to large apartment complexes or single-family homes. To be truly effective, affordable housing must include options for households earning below 60% of the Area Median Income (AMI).

My Approach:

  • Promote Small-Scale, Community-Focused Housing Options. Encourage duplexes, triplexes, and townhomes that blend into existing neighborhoods.

  • Work at the State Level to Address Construction Defect Liability. Advocate for state and local solutions that reduce legal barriers for townhome and condo construction while maintaining high-quality building standards.

  • Ensure Housing Accessibility at All Income Levels. Work with developers who specialize in lower-income housing and ensure a portion of new developments include units for families making 60% or less of AMI.

  • Protect Open Spaces & Parks from Development. Ward 3’s parks should never be developed. Instead, we should focus housing efforts on revitalizing outdated areas across the city.

  • Require Transparency in Housing Affordability Commitments. Ensure that developers follow through on affordability promises, so housing remains within reach for all income levels.

  • Assess City Services Before Expansion. Before approving new housing, conduct impact studies on transportation, emergency services, and utilities to ensure our city can support growth

2) Ensure Our Infrastructure Can Support Growth Before Approving Housing Expansion (Currently Building Out)

One area of opportunity is strengthening collaboration with environmental and transportation professionals to assess the long-term sustainability of new development. From water and energy usage to traffic congestion and air quality, responsible growth requires that we bring all stakeholders to the table, not just developers, but also the people who will live, work, and navigate these spaces every day.

My Approach:

  • Engage Environmental & Transportation Experts. Partner with professionals who can assess long-term impacts on traffic, air quality, water use, and sustainability.

  • Prioritize Infrastructure Upgrades Alongside Housing. Advocate for water, energy, and sewer improvements in high-growth areas so city services remain reliable.

  • Encourage Mixed-Use, Walkable Communities. Developments should integrate housing with nearby jobs, retail, and transit options to reduce traffic congestion.

3) Forge Partnerships for Workforce Housing

Definition: Workforce housing provides affordable options for middle-income workers such as teachers, firefighters, nurses, and public servants who serve our community but struggle to live here.

My Approach:

  • Collaborate with Nonprofits and Faith-Based Organizations. Partner with mission-driven groups to develop housing that meets the needs of our essential workers.

  • Engage Local Businesses. Work with employers to create housing solutions that attract and retain a stable workforce, potentially through employer-assisted housing programs.

  • Utilize Partnerships. Leverage the strengths of both the public and private sectors to finance and develop affordable housing projects.

  • Ensure Transit Accessibility to Workforce Housing. Develop workforce housing along transit corridors, making commuting to jobs easier for essential workers.

  • Identify and Remove Barriers to Workforce Housing Development. Evaluate legal, financial, and zoning barriers that prevent workforce housing development and explore policy changes or incentives to remove them.

4) Utilize Modular & Prefabricated Housing for Faster, Cost-Effective Development

Proven Strategy: Multiple cities have successfully used modular and prefabricated housing to reduce construction time and costs while maintaining high-quality design and sustainability.

My Approach:

  • Encourage Pilot Projects in Outdated Areas. Identify older, underutilized commercial spaces where modular housing can revitalize the area with new, affordable homes.

  • Streamline Approval & Permitting Processes. Ensure modular construction projects aren’t delayed by unnecessary red tape while still meeting high design and sustainability standards.

  • Ensure Sustainable, Eco-Friendly Materials. Push for green building practices in modular developments, reducing environmental impact while lowering utility costs for residents.

  • Confirm Utility & Roadway Capacity Before Expanding Modular Housing. New developments should not strain existing water, electricity, or transportation networks.

  • Protect Existing Mobile Home Communities. Explore zoning protections, anti-displacement policies, and resident purchase programs to prevent vulnerable communities from being displaced due to land sales and redevelopment.

5) Require Sustainable, Eco-Friendly Development from Developers (Currently Building Out)

Why This Matters: Growth and sustainability must go hand in hand, we can build smarter, not just bigger. Lakewood’s Comprehensive Plan should not be wish lists, they should be enforceable through ordinances that reflect what residents have consistently asked for, putting the environment first in every development decision. Sustainable, responsible growth means ensuring water, energy, transit, and infrastructure are strengthened before expansion, not as an afterthought.

Without a healthy environment, we cannot achieve long-term economic success or community well-being.

My Approach:

  • Set Clear Sustainability Standards for Developers. Ensure all new residential projects meet green building standards with energy-efficient materials, solar integration, and smart water use.

  • Advocate for Eco-Friendly Living Spaces. Encourage developments that include green infrastructure, public transit access, and pedestrian-friendly design.

  • Ensure Development Fits Within Lakewoods Vision. Work with residents to create sustainability goals for housing that reflect the priorities of our community.

  • Require Green Transit Accessibility. New housing should be connected to bike lanes, bus routes, and pedestrian-friendly pathways.

Addressing Federal Center Layoffs: Supporting Our Workforce and Community

The Issue:

Recent federal workforce reductions under the current administration have led to significant job losses nationwide, including in Colorado. The Denver Federal Center in Lakewood, a major employment hub, faces layoffs that could impact hundreds of local residents. Proactive measures are essential to support affected workers and maintain community stability.

Community-Shaped Solutions:

1) Establish a Rapid Response Task Force (Currently Building Out)

Why This Matters: Immediate action can mitigate the adverse effects of mass layoffs on workers and the local economy.

My Approach:

  • Form a Coalition of Stakeholders. Bring together city officials, local businesses, workforce development agencies, and educational institutions to coordinate support efforts.

  • Provide Career Transition Services. Offer resume workshops, job fairs, and counseling to help displaced workers find new employment opportunities.

  • Facilitate Skill Development Programs. Partner with community colleges and training centers to provide courses that align with current job market demands.

2) Engage with State Authorities (Currently Implementing)

Why This Matters: Collaboration with higher levels of government can unlock additional resources and influence decisions affecting our community.

My Approach:

  • Participate in Policy Discussions. Ensure Lakewood's interests are represented in conversations about federal workforce policies and restructuring plans.

  • Monitor Legislative Developments. Stay informed about policy changes to proactively address potential impacts on our community.

3) Foster Community Support Networks (Currently Building Out)

Why This Matters: A strong community network provides emotional and practical support during times of uncertainty.

My Approach:

  • Organize Support Groups. Create forums where affected workers can share experiences and resources.

  • Promote Local Hiring Initiatives. Encourage businesses to prioritize hiring displaced federal employees, recognizing their skills and experience.

  • Enhance Communication Channels. Keep the community informed about available resources, job openings, and support services through regular updates.

Sustainable Growth: Balancing Development & Environmental Responsibility.

The Issue:

In Lakewood, the pursuit of development often raises concerns about preserving our cherished parks and green spaces. However, development and sustainability can coexist harmoniously. By adopting thoughtful strategies, we can foster growth while safeguarding our environment, ensuring a healthy community for current and future generations.

Sustainability is also not just about protecting green spaces, it’s also about ensuring Lakewood is prepared for the realities of climate change, including wildfire risks. With Colorado experiencing increased wildfire threats, Lakewood must be proactive in fire mitigation while maintaining responsible environmental stewardship.

Community-Shaped Solutions:

1) Integrate Green Infrastructure into Development (Currently Building Out)

Why This Matters: Sustainability isn’t just about what we build, it’s about how we build it and who is involved in shaping that growth. To ensure Lakewood’s future is both environmentally responsible and community-driven, we must incorporate green infrastructure into planning while ensuring residents are stakeholders, not spectators in development decisions.

By engaging environmental professionals, transit experts, and community members early in the planning process, we can proactively address energy efficiency, transportation impacts, and climate resilience, ensuring that growth enhances rather than strains our natural environment. Strengthening environmental review processes and increasing public participation in development decisions will help us build a Lakewood that is smarter, more resilient, and sustainable for generations to come.

My Approach:

  • Expand Green Infrastructure. Develop more parks, community gardens, and tree-lined streets to improve air quality, enhance public spaces, and create natural cooling zones.

  • Encourage Green Exteriors & Sustainable Building Design. Support the use of vegetation-covered exteriors, energy-efficient materials, and smart water conservation practices in both public and private developments.

  • Enhance Stormwater Management. Implement permeable pavements, rain gardens, and natural filtration systems to reduce flood risks and improve water quality.

  • Require Environmental Review in Growth Planning. Ensure thorough environmental and infrastructure impact assessments before approving major development projects.

  • Increase Public Engagement in Sustainability & Development. Establish accessible forums and feedback mechanisms so that residents have a say in projects that impact their neighborhoods.

  • Expand the Role of Environmental Experts in City Planning. Work with climate professionals, sustainability advocates, and engineers to ensure that all major growth decisions align with long-term ecological responsibility.

2) Preserve and Protect Natural Ecosystems (Currently Implementing)

Why This Matters: Maintaining healthy ecosystems is vital for biodiversity, climate resilience, and community health.

My Approach:

  • Safeguard Existing Green Spaces. Enforce strict regulations against the encroachment of development on parks and natural reserves.

  • Promote Native Landscaping. Encourage the use of indigenous plants in public and private spaces to support local wildlife and reduce water usage.

3) Foster Community Engagement and Education

Why This Matters: An informed and involved community is essential for the success of sustainability initiatives.

My Approach:

  • Launch Environmental Awareness Campaigns. Educate residents about the benefits of sustainability practices and how they can contribute.

  • Encourage Public Participation in Planning. Involve community members in decision-making processes regarding development and environmental conservation.

  • Support Local Sustainability Projects. Provide resources and recognition for grassroots initiatives that promote environmental stewardship.

4) Partner with West Metro Fire to Strengthen Wildfire Prevention (Currently Implementing)

Why This Matters: Wildfires are becoming more frequent and severe, and prevention efforts must be coordinated across agencies and communities.

My Approach:

  • Support and Expand Wildfire Mitigation Efforts. Ensure the city is actively collaborating with West Metro Fire to enhance fire mitigation programs and defensible space education.

  • Promote Fire-Resistant Landscaping & Responsible Tree Planting. Encourage climate-smart landscaping policies that balance tree planting with fire safety to reduce fuel loads in high-risk areas.

  • Educate Residents on Fire Prevention & Emergency Preparedness. Work with fire officials to increase public education on home hardening, evacuation plans, and defensible space requirements.

Vacant Properties & Public Safety:
Revitalizing Neighborhoods & Holding Property Owners Accountable

The Issue:

When property owners neglect their buildings, they don’t just hurt their bottom line, they put entire neighborhoods at risk. Run-down buildings invite crime, drag down property values, and strain law enforcement. Lakewood’s residents work too hard to see their neighborhoods suffer because of absentee landlords. That’s why I will fight for stronger enforcement, accountability, and real incentives for revitalization. Neglected properties must either contribute to our community or they must change hands to someone who will.

Many cities have successfully cracked down on absentee landlords and vacant property neglect through stronger code enforcement, adaptive reuse policies, and targeted revitalization efforts. Lakewood must take a proactive approach, ensuring property owners are held accountable while creating incentives for redevelopment that benefits the entire community.

Community-Shaped Solutions:

1) Enforce Stronger Code Violations & Accountability for Negligent Property Owners (Currently Building Out)

Why This Matters: Neglected properties attract vandalism, crime, and safety hazards, making neighborhoods less safe while dragging down property values. Several cities have successfully implemented stricter vacant property regulations, holding owners accountable through financial penalties and enforcement.

My Approach:

  • Strengthen Code Enforcement for Vacant Properties. Increase fines and penalties on absentee landlords who fail to maintain vacant buildings.

  • Implement a Proactive Inspection Program. Rather than waiting for complaints, identify problem properties early through routine inspections.

  • Require Registration & Contact Information for Vacant Properties. Property owners must be reachable and responsive, ensuring the city can hold them accountable.

  • Make Property Enforcement More Transparent. Residents should have an accessible way to track problem properties and report concerns to the city.

2) Incentivize Adaptive Reuse for Vacant Properties

Proven Strategy: Cities have successfully converted vacant properties into housing, business hubs, and community spaces through adaptive reuse incentives, offering tax breaks, grants, or fast-tracked permitting for redevelopment projects.

My Approach:

  • Create Financial Incentives for Reuse & Redevelopment. Offer tax credits, grants, or fee reductions for property owners who turn vacant buildings into housing, local businesses, or community spaces.

  • Streamline Permitting for Redevelopment Projects. Reduce red tape for renovation projects that revitalize vacant properties while ensuring they meet safety and sustainability standards.

  • Encourage Mixed-Use Development. Support projects that combine housing, retail, and office space in underutilized buildings, bringing life back to neighborhoods.

3) Create a Vacant Property Task Force to Track & Address Problem Properties

Why This Matters: Many cities have successfully reduced vacancy rates by forming task forces dedicated to tracking vacant properties, working with owners, and fast-tracking redevelopment opportunities.

My Approach:

  • Develop a Citywide Vacant Property Database. Track all vacant and abandoned properties in Lakewood, making data public so residents and businesses can be aware of problem areas.

  • Require Absentee Landlords to Submit Maintenance & Redevelopment Plans. Property owners must prove they are maintaining and securing vacant buildings or provide a timeline for redevelopment.

  • Ensure Quick Action on Safety Hazards. Work with law enforcement and code enforcement officials to address repeat offenders quickly.

  • Create a Response System for Resident Concerns. Establish clear points of contact so that residents know where to report issues, and ensure that action is taken.

Revitalizing Lakewood's Culinary Scene

The Issue:

To truly revitalize Lakewood’s culinary scene, we must also ensure that the people who work in restaurants can afford to live here. If we create affordable housing options for service industry workers, we don’t just attract restaurants, we create a sustainable, thriving local economy where businesses have the staff they need to succeed.

Community-Shaped Solutions:

1) Offer Relocation Incentives to Attract Restaurateurs to Lakewood

Why This Matters: Lakewood can position itself as an attractive alternative for restaurateurs seeking new opportunities.

My Approach:

  • Provide Financial Incentives for Relocation. Offer grants, tax breaks, or low-interest loans to restaurateurs who choose to establish their businesses in Lakewood.

  • Streamline Permitting and Licensing Processes. Simplify and expedite the approval process for new restaurants to reduce bureaucratic delays.

  • Facilitate Connections with Local Suppliers. Encourage partnerships between incoming restaurants and local producers to foster a sustainable food ecosystem.

2) Transform Vacant Retail Spaces into Food Halls and Shared Kitchens

Proven Strategy: Cities in Colorado have successfully converted underutilized spaces into food halls, creating vibrant community hubs and providing platforms for small businesses.

My Approach:

  • Identify Suitable Vacant Properties. Conduct a survey to locate empty retail spaces ideal for conversion into food halls or shared kitchen facilities.

  • Collaborate with Developers and Chefs. Partner with property developers and culinary professionals to design and implement these communal dining spaces.

  • Offer Incentives for Adaptive Reuse. Provide financial benefits to property owners and entrepreneurs who invest in transforming vacant spaces.

  • Ensure Accessibility and Affordability. Encourage design to be inclusive, offering affordable options for both vendors and patrons.

3) Market Lakewood as a Business-Friendly City for Culinary Ventures (Currently Building Out)

Why This Matters: A proactive marketing strategy can position Lakewood as an appealing destination for restaurateurs and food enthusiasts alike.

My Approach:

  • Develop a Comprehensive Marketing Campaign. Highlight Lakewood's advantages, such as supportive business policies, available spaces, and community engagement.

  • Showcase Success Stories. Promote testimonials from successful local restaurateurs to illustrate the city's commitment to culinary enterprises.

  • Engage with Culinary Associations. Collaborate with organizations to spread the word about opportunities in Lakewood.

  • Utilize Digital Platforms. Leverage social media and online forums to reach a broader audience of potential business owners and patrons.

Civic Engagement, Government Transparency,
& Building Trust: Bringing Government to the People

The Issue:

Too often, residents feel disconnected from local government, they don’t know where to find information, feel unheard in decision-making, or find city processes too complex to navigate. Government should not be difficult to access. Every resident should have a clear pathway to participate, understand city policies, and trust that their voices truly matter.

Lakewood has existing tools like Lakewood’s website and Lakewood Speaks, which help residents engage with city issues. However, there are always opportunities to make these platforms more user-friendly and accessible.

Additionally, engagement should not be one-sided. We cannot expect residents to always come to us, we must go to them. That means having an active role in community events, neighborhood gatherings, and using modern digital tools to keep people informed in a way that fits their lives.

As a community leader and advocate, I already prioritize transparency, accessibility, and engagement in my work. If elected, I will lead by example, using short video updates, in-person neighborhood sessions, and digital tools to ensure residents feel heard, valued, and involved in Lakewood’s future.

Community-Shaped Solutions:

1) Improve Digital Tools & Make Government More User-Friendly (Currently Building Out)

Current Tools: Lakewood’s website and Lakewood Speaks help residents engage with city issues, but they can be improved to be more user-friendly and accessible.

My Approach:

  • Work with City Staff to Improve Website Navigation & Searchability. Ensure that city services, meeting minutes, and key policies are easy to navigate and understand.

  • Enhance Lakewood Speaks for Better Engagement. Improve the platform’s accessibility, notification systems, and translation options so that more residents can participate in civic discussions.

  • Break Down Long City Meetings into Searchable Video Clips. Implement timestamps or chapters on YouTube and digital platforms, so residents can quickly find discussions that matter most to them.

  • Use Digital Alerts to Notify Residents of Key Issues. Create opt-in notifications via text or email so residents can receive updates on issues affecting their neighborhood.

2) Lead with Short Video Updates & Transparent Communication (Currently Building Out)

Why This Matters: Most residents don’t have time to watch long city meetings or read complex documents, but they still deserve to know what’s happening in their government.

My Approach:

  • Commit to Regular Short Video Updates. I will personally record and share updates on city policies, upcoming meetings, and key issues in a digestible, accessible format.

  • Ensure Key Policy Decisions Are Summarized Clearly. No resident should have to dig through hours of meeting footage or lengthy PDFs, they should be able to quickly understand what’s happening.

  • Use Multiple Channels to Reach Residents. Videos should always be available on YouTube, social media, and through email newsletters, ensuring residents can access them however they prefer.

  • Expand Video Content for Lakewood Speaks. Encourage the city to provide short explainer videos alongside policy discussions, making it easier for residents to understand complex issues.

3) Bring Government to the Community, Not Just City Hall (Currently Implementing)

Why This Matters: Not everyone can attend city meetings, but every resident deserves to be heard. We must take government into neighborhoods instead of always expecting people to come to us.

My Approach:

  • Launch Neighborhood Listening Tours. Hold in-person engagement sessions in every part of Ward 3 so that residents can voice their concerns directly in their own communities.

  • Host Pop-Up Government Events at Community Gatherings. Instead of expecting people to attend city meetings, bring engagement opportunities to local events, farmers markets, and school functions.

  • Provide Multiple Ways for Residents to Give Feedback. Some residents prefer in-person meetings, while others prefer email, digital surveys, or phone calls. Lakewood should provide multiple ways for residents to engage.

  • Ensure Transparency & Follow-Through. Listening isn’t enough, and residents should see real action based on their input. Regular reports should show how community feedback is shaping policies.

4) Evaluate & Improve Ward 3 Meetings Based on Community Feedback (Currently Implementing)

Why This Matters: Ward meetings have been a valuable engagement tool, but they must evolve to remain effective and accessible to all residents.

My Approach:

  • Conduct Regular Resident Surveys on Engagement Preferences. Gather feedback on preferred meeting formats, times, and locations to ensure more residents can participate.

  • Make Ward Meetings More Interactive & Accessible. Offer virtual participation options and record meetings for those unable to attend live. Recorded meetings also provide the opportunity to add subtitles for non-English speakers.

  • Rotate Locations & Times for Maximum Accessibility. Some residents may prefer weekend meetings, evening sessions, or different locations that are easier to reach.

  • Ensure Meetings Are Well-Publicized & Easy to Attend. Use multiple communication channels to notify residents about upcoming meetings, ensuring they are aware and can

5) Build Trust Through Action & Accountability (Currently Implementing)

Why This Matters: Trust in government isn’t built with words, it’s built with action, accountability, and real engagement with the people.

My Approach:

  • Regularly Report Back on Progress & Community Impact. Residents should see how their input is shaping city decisions. I will push for quarterly reports showing real changes based on community engagement.

  • Advocate for More Diverse Representation in City Decision-Making. Work to ensure that diverse voices, including historically underrepresented groups, are part of the civic process. I will do this by by proactively engaging with these communities where they are, attending cultural events, hosting listening sessions in diverse neighborhoods, and building relationships with community leaders.

  • Expand Language Accessibility & Outreach Efforts. Ensure city resources, meetings, and engagement opportunities are available in multiple languages to make local government more accessible to all residents.

  • Lead by Example as a Transparent, Accessible City Council Member. If elected, I will share regular updates and make myself available to listen and act on community concerns.

Supporting Seniors and Aging Populations: Ensuring Dignity, Independence, and Quality of Life

The Issue:

Lakewood’s senior population is growing, and we must ensure that aging residents have access to affordable housing, in-home support, transportation, and social engagement opportunities. Many seniors live on fixed incomes, require specialized services to remain independent, and need reliable transportation to access healthcare, groceries, and social activities.

While programs exist, we must continuously evaluate whether they are truly meeting the needs of seniors and adapt where necessary. By working directly with the senior community to assess existing resources, we can identify gaps and improve services to ensure aging residents can continue living comfortably and staying engaged in their communities.

Community-Shaped Solutions:

1) Expand Affordable Senior Housing

Why This Matters: Many seniors live on fixed incomes, making affordable housing essential for their financial stability and well-being.

My Approach:

  • Ensure More Affordable Housing Options for Seniors. Partner with developers and nonprofits to create more affordable housing specifically designed for aging residents, including accessible apartment complexes and independent living communities.

  • Implement Intergenerational Home-Sharing Programs: Facilitate programs that connect seniors with younger renters, offering affordable housing solutions and companionship. Platforms like Nesterly and Organizations like Sunshine Home Partners have successfully matched older homeowners with young renters, providing below-market rent in exchange for assistance with household tasks.

2) Strengthen Aging-in-Place & Community Support Programs (Currently Building Out)

Why This Matters: Most seniors want to stay in their homes as long as possible. Providing the right support services ensures they can do so without compromising safety or independence.

My Approach:

  • Expand Senior Home Assistance Services. Ensure that seniors have access to affordable in-home care, including meal delivery, cleaning assistance, and health check-ins.

  • Create Community Support Networks for Aging Residents. Support neighborhood-based volunteer programs where residents help seniors with daily tasks, yard work, or companionship.

  • Advocate for CAPABLE Programs (Community Aging in Place - Advancing Better Living for Elders). Work with local health providers to expand at-home nursing and therapy services to help seniors stay independent.

3) Continuously Evaluate Senior Transportation to Ensure Accessibility & Reliability

Why This Matters: Lakewood already has a senior transportation program called Lakewood Rides Transportation, but we must assess whether they meet demand and ensure seniors can easily access rides to medical appointments, grocery stores, and community centers.

My Approach:

  • Conduct Regular Surveys & Public Engagement Sessions with Seniors. Meet directly with aging residents to determine if existing shuttle and transit services are meeting their needs.

  • Expand Services if Demand Exceeds Availability. If feedback indicates seniors are struggling to access transit, advocate for expanded shuttle services or improved pickup locations.

  • Ensure Accessibility. Work with city transit officials to ensure senior transportation is ADA-compliant and easy to navigate.

4) Combat Senior Isolation by Expanding Community Engagement Opportunities (Currently Building Out)

Why This Matters: Social isolation is a growing issue among older adults, leading to higher risks of depression and health complications. We must create opportunities for seniors to stay active, connected, and engaged.

My Approach:

  • Support Local Community Spaces. Ensure senior centers remain well-funded with diverse programming, fitness classes, and social activities.

  • Promote Intergenerational Programs. Connect seniors with younger generations through mentorship, storytelling programs, and school partnerships.

  • Support Digital Literacy & Technology Access for Seniors. Offer free or low-cost digital training for seniors to help them stay connected with loved ones, attend virtual events, and access online city resources.

Advocating for Compassionate Immigration Policies in Lakewood

The Issue:

Immigration remains a pivotal topic in our community, with many residents seeking clarity on my stance. I firmly believe in fostering an environment where all individuals can contribute to Lakewood without unnecessary obstacles. It's imperative to approach immigration through a lens of humanity and compassion, ensuring that our policies reflect these values.

Community-Shaped Solutions:

1) Uphold Safe Educational Environments for All Students (Currently Implementing)

Why This Matters: Every child deserves access to education without fear or intimidation.

My Approach:

  • Support Protective School Policies. Applaud and reinforce decisions by educational institutions, such as Jeffco Public Schools, which have taken steps to protect immigrant students. For instance, Jeffco has implemented policies to minimize disruptions related to immigration enforcement, ensuring that all students feel secure.

  • Collaborate with School Districts. Work closely with local school boards to develop and maintain guidelines that prevent unwarranted immigration enforcement on school grounds.

  • Promote Awareness. Ensure that families are informed about their rights and the resources available to them within the school system.

2) Advocate for Non-Cooperation Policies with Unwarranted Immigration Enforcement

Why This Matters: Local resources should prioritize community safety and trust, not unwarranted immigration enforcement.

My Approach:

  • Implement Clear Guidelines. Establish policies that require federal agents to present valid judicial warrants before accessing city facilities or information.

  • Train City Staff. Equip municipal employees with the knowledge to handle inquiries from immigration authorities appropriately, ensuring they understand the legal requirements and the rights of residents.

  • Protect Personal Information. Ensure that the city does not disclose personal information to immigration authorities without due process.

3) Foster an Inclusive Community Through Supportive Services (Currently Building Out)

Why This Matters: Engaging with all residents enhances Lakewood's cultural richness and economic vitality.

My Approach:

  • Expand Access to Resources. Provide language assistance, legal aid referrals, and other essential services to help immigrants navigate city systems.

  • Celebrate Cultural Diversity. Organize community events that honor the diverse backgrounds of Lakewood's residents, promoting understanding and unity.

  • Support Pathways to Citizenship. Collaborate with organizations that offer citizenship classes and resources, aiding residents on their journey to becoming full participants in our community.

Reducing Car Dependency & Expanding Transit:
Building a Sustainable, Connected Lakewood

The Issue:

Lakewood is a city where people value independence and mobility, but we also know that traffic, road safety, and accessibility matter. Giving people more options to get around, whether it’s by car, bus, bike, or foot, makes Lakewood safer, more connected, and more livable. Our goal isn’t to take away choices but to expand them so that seniors, working families, and businesses all benefit. Learning from other cities' successes can guide Lakewood in implementing effective solutions.

Community-Shaped Solutions:

1) Promote Walkable Mixed-Use Communities (Currently Implementing)

Why This Matters: Designing neighborhoods where residents can live, work, and play without relying on cars enhances quality of life and reduces traffic congestion.

My Approach:

  • Revise Zoning Policies. Update zoning regulations to allow for mixed-use developments, enabling residential, commercial, and recreational spaces to coexist. This reduces the need for long commutes and fosters local economies.

  • Enhance Pedestrian Infrastructure. Invest in sidewalks, crosswalks, and pedestrian plazas to make walking a safe and attractive option for residents.

2) Expand and Improve Public Transit Options (Currently Implementing)

Why This Matters: Reliable and efficient public transit provides a viable alternative to car travel, reducing traffic and environmental impact.

My Approach:

  • Strengthen Partnerships with RTD. Collaborate closely with the Regional Transportation District to ensure routes are efficient, cover key areas, and meet residents' needs.

  • Explore and Expand On-Demand Transit Services. Explore flexible, app-based transit options that combine traditional bus services with ride-sharing technology to offer affordable, convenient transportation.

3) Develop Comprehensive Trail and Bike Lane Networks

Why This Matters: Safe and connected trails and bike lanes encourage cycling and walking, promoting healthier lifestyles and reducing vehicle use.

My Approach:

  • Expand Protected Bike Lanes: Install bike lanes separated from traffic to increase safety and encourage cycling. Studies show that cities with protected bike lanes experience fewer traffic fatalities and serious injuries.

  • Connect Existing Trails: Link current trail systems to create a cohesive network, making it easier for residents to navigate the city without a car.

  • Implement Traffic Calming Measures: Design streets to slow down traffic, making them safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

4) Educate the Community on Sustainable Transportation Benefits

Why This Matters: Awareness and understanding are crucial for encouraging residents to embrace alternative transportation modes.

My Approach:

  • Launch Public Awareness Campaigns. Inform residents about the environmental, health, and economic benefits of reducing car usage.

  • Host Community Workshops. Offer sessions on safe cycling practices, public transit navigation, and the advantages of mixed-use communities.

  • Collaborate with Schools, Organizations, and Businesses. Partner with local institutions to promote sustainable commuting options like biking, walking, and public transit.

Moving Forward Together: A Community-Centered Approach

This page outlines my approach to key issues facing Lakewood, but leadership is about more than having answers, it’s about working with the community to build solutions that reflect our shared values and vision.

As Franklin D. Roosevelt said:
"The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little."

If re-elected, I am committed to:

  • Listening to Ward 3 residents.

  • Collaborating with the community, experts, and stakeholders to create real solutions.

  • Ensuring government is transparent, accessible, and focused on progress with purpose.
